  • 20 August 2013, Silchar, Assam, INDIA : Women tea pickers head home after a day picking leaves on Bhuvan Valley Tea Estate outside Silchan in Assam. Tea workers on tea estates in the North Eastern Indian state of Assam have been hit hard by a combination of events in the industry. A downturn in the price of tea has had many estate owners not fulfilling their obligations on pay and conditions for the lowly paid pickers and maintenance staff. Lack of investment and crumbling infrastructure combined with a rise in the population of estate families has created a crisis. The home of Sri Sathya Sai Baba, who died on 24 April 2011 was a mere village at the time of his birth. Today it is a thriving town centered around Ashram and includes a state of the art free hospital, a free university and schools funded by donations from devotees. The spice trade in Kerala is a large part of the domestic economy and the high value spices make up a large proportion of the exports that Kerala trades to the United States.   • Upendra Rai with his sick son Krishna Kumar from Bhagwanpuri Raiti village at his home next to the Anganwadi health clinic where oral rehydration salts (ORS) and zinc tablets are given out to combat the sometimes fatal effects of diarrhea.The village located in Vaishali district outside Patna in Bihar, India has been rolling out the ORS and Zinc program as part of the IKEA Social Initiative to combat child mortality rates caused by diarrhea. It is proving to be very successful with education and support provided by local nursing staff, health activists and program officers from UNICEF. The treatment is a 14 day course administering diluted oral rehydration salts and a zinc tablet which is more effective than salts alone in combating the effects of severe diarrhea.
